This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This book is dated, not all of the information is correct. For example, at location 1924:
(quote) The chief work by Hubert Van Eyck is the large altar-piece painted for
the cathedral of S. Bavon at Ghent;--parts of this have been removed and
are now in the Berlin Gallery (unquote) has the following problems:

-This work is now believed to be painted by Jan & Hubert van Eijck, it is believed Jan did most of the work. Some believe Hubert painted very little of this painting, or maybe even nothing. The views of art-historians about the role of Hubert have changed; modern techniques like X-ray (showing the sketches below the painting) and dendrology (science of trees, helps dating paintings on wooden panels) have given information that was not available at the time this book was written.

-There are no longer parts of this work in Berlin: as part of the Treaty of Versailles (1919) the parts of this painting that were in Germany were given back to Ghent in 1920.
In 1934 two panels were stolen, only one of these has been recovered, the panel 'The Rightious Judges' is still missing.

This book is well-written, so if you don't mind having to look up the pictures online (just type the name of the painting you're looking for in your search-engine) or in a book, then this book will be ok. Just keep in mind that some of the information given in this book is dated. So before you head of to Berlin to see part of the "Adoration of the Lamb" by the Van Eijck brothers, check first if its still there (it is not: you'll have to travel to Ghent to see it, but beware: in september 2012 restauration of this painting will start, for a period of 5 years only part of the painting will be in the church, the panel that the restaurators will be working on will be at a different location that can not be visited).
